The benefits of yoga are plenty, and that it acts as a great form of exercise and relaxation is known to all. But a recent study published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease suggests that regular yoga can help in strengthening your brain and increasing your ability to think, too!
29 middle-aged and older adults suffering from mild cognitive impairment were examined by scientists and were divided into two groups, based on the results. One group underwent a brain-training program, while the other was made to practice forms of Yoga and meditation such as Kundalini and Kirtan Kriya. Both the activities were performed for a period 12 weeks. At the end of the practice, both groups went through a round of cognitive tests and brain scans. Both groups showed improvement in their behavior but individuals from the group that performed yoga had a better sense of balance, depth perception, and the ability to navigate and recognize objects.
Communication in the brain regions that control attention also proved to be smoother and more efficient. The study stated that yoga is definitely a more effective remedy for the brain that cognitive exercises.
